Arriving at the top of Fira can be a bit overwhelming, but fear not, your private guide or driver host will be waiting for you with a sign bearing your name. If you haven’t booked a private tour in advance, don’t worry – there are plenty of travel and tour providers near the cable car station. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can take a leisurely 15-20 minute walk to the center of Fira, where you’ll find the central bus station and taxi station to explore the rest of Santorini. Remember, those hardworking drivers and guides are doing their best, so keep a smile on your face and enjoy your well-deserved vacation!

      4. Tendering to the port of Athinios

But what if you’re arriving by cruise ship and being tendered to the port of Athinios? No problem! Just hop on one of the designated buses that will take you to the top of Fira for your semi-private shore excursion. And when your tour is finished, don’t forget to make your way back to the cable car area or 588 stairs to catch your last tender back to the ship.

Santorini is one of the most popular cruise ship destinations in the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people visit the island on cruise ships. So if you are planning on visiting Santorini on a cruise ship, buckle up because this island is a paradise on earth! From its breathtaking views to its unique architecture and its black volcanic beaches, Santorini is a place that you don’t want to miss. But before you disembark, here are some practical tips to make the most out of your time on this stunning island.

Arriving in Santorini

1. Ask for an early disembarkation ticket

Time is of the essence when you’re traveling, and Santorini is no exception. So, if your cruise ship is arriving in the morning, make sure to ask for an early disembarkation ticket. You will be tendered ashore from the cruise ship to the port named Gialos, located below Fira, the capital of Santorini. This way, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the island and see everything it has to offer, by avoiding the long lines. Plus, it’s always better to be safe than sorry, right?

2. Three options to get to the top of Fira

Once you’re on the island, you’ll need to get to the top of Fira. There are three options to choose from, so pick the one that suits you best.

The first option is to take the cable car. It’s a quick and easy ride, but make sure to start early to avoid the long queues. The ride to the top takes less than 2 minutes and costs 6 euros per person per way. It is not possible to purchase the tickets in advance. Getting back to the port for your tender boat you have to purchase your tickets again from the cable cars desk. The second option is to ride on a donkey or a mule. The ride from the port to the top of Fira takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It is something exciting but not without any risk. No donkey master is leading you and the donkey or the mule. Under the hot sun of Santorini, this is not something I would suggest. Besides that, the animals are walking up and down under not very pleasant conditions. This is for me the less favorable option.

And lastly, you can walk from the port to the top of Fira, which will take you 20 to 45 minutes to reach the top depending on your physical condition, since there are 588 steps to be taken! Drink enough water and of course do not forget your sun blocker and your hat. It’s a bit of a hike, but it’s worth it for the breathtaking views!
